When I first started Great Homeschool Reviews, I reached out in a few groups to find curriculum creators who would be willing to allow me to review their products. Bonnie was one of the first responses that I got back, and when she briefly explained her product, I was immediately intrigued. I love unit studies, and I often struggle to find good resources for teaching my children about Asiatic countries.

Journey Through Asia is a beautiful Christian-based curriculum that explores the growth, history, and expansion of Christianity through Asian nations. The curriculum is appropriate for a multi-age family setting: simple enough that young children can participate, but has enough extension activities that older students are able to stay occupied and engaged in the lessons.

The main lesson book has a total of 60 lessons, each focused on an individual Asian nationality/country. As I read though the lessons, I was struck by how much love and respect has been poured into this curriculum. At the end of each chapter Bonnie has included prompts for prayers that the family can offer over each nationality that is relevant to the struggles that they face today. This was particularly touching to me, and I found myself blinking back some tears.

Here is a list of tools and resources included in this unit study:

1) Introduction File, with instructions on how to best use the curriculum, and how to combine options for different students.

2) Scope and Sequence: Gives background on what each chapter will cover, includes keywords & figures. This will help with at-a-glance lesson preparation.

3) Student Checklist: Allows you to track what you have covered in each lesson. Helpful if you need to split a lesson over two or more days.

4) Lesson Plan Options: Ideas for what to do in each lesson to add onto learning. Includes ideas from Suggested Readings

5) Unit Study Manual: The main lesson material is found here. This can be read out loud as is, or taken into sections.

6) Unit Study Student Journal: This allows students to record their thoughts, impressions, and big ideas from each lesson, as well as answer comprehension questions.

7) Student Journal Answer Key: Contains answers to questions from Student Journal

8) Student/Family Prayer Journal: Each country/region has it’s own section to write down short prayers specific for that region.

9) Project Book: Additional ideas, writing/drawing prompts, recipes, research projects, and more to expand upon understanding of each country.

10) Spelling and Vocabulary work: Spelling work, vocabulary prompts, flashcards.

Within the lessons themselves are cultural segments, historical figures, and nature study portions about animals indigenous to the regions being discussed.

This Unit Study curriculum is packed with activities that a wide age range of children can participate in, and it has a strong focus on the history of Christian missionary work throughout Asia. I think this is an excellent curriculum for families that are searching for a unit that will cover history, geography, nature study, and language arts work.
